Adelle Frejus, BKD

Tell us a little about yourself?

Hey I'm Adelle Frejus, Founder of BKD, a bakery with a focus on baking with kids.  I have been living in Forest Hill for 3 months, did a spat in Shoreditch before that and lived in East Dulwich for many years before that.  I'm originally from South Wales, but a SE London girl at heart!   I have a little boy Cai who's 3.5 and two step children, Elsie May Smith (8), Stanley Smith (14), all baking pros!

What is BKD and why did you set it up?

BKD is an award winning kids baking company.  We offer fun, creative kids baking events, classes and parties as well as our newly launched baking kits.  All handmade in our Peckham bakery.

I'm a self-taught baker, having spent ten years working in Market Research, alongside running the wedding blog Peonies & Pearls.  I  also studied Graphic Design (many years ago!).

BKD launched from my kitchen in Shoreditch. What originally started as fun at home with my kids, grew as news spread and I moved out of my home with my baking classes to local eateries such as Nancy’s Pantry and the Proud Archivist.  I then started receiving requests from customers asking me to host private birthday parties, make bespoke biscuits and work at corporate kids events, with the likes of brands such as Toca Boca, Nintendo, Fortnum & Mason, Virgin, Alex and Alexa and more.  I now have a team of 5 who assist me at events all over London.

I originally set up BKD as baking had become a passion of mine, I love working with kids (I'd always wanted to be a primary school teacher) and I wanted to feel more in control of my life and have more flexibility with being a mum.

How do you balance running a business with motherhood?

It's funny as I thought running my own business would balance well with family life, whilst it offers me flexibility I also have to work very hard!  There are never enough hours in the day and I often find myself working at nights when the kids are in bed. But saying that I love how creative my life now is, I love running my own business and get such a buzz out of it!  I feel as if I'm on adventure and I never know what's around the corner, only last week I received a book offer from an amazing publisher! I feel tired but very lucky :)

What do you love about SE london and particularly being a mother here?

Having not long moved from Shoreditch, I'm loving how green it is and all amazing parks on our doorstep.  I seriously craved SE London, when I was in all the hustle and bustle.  We are also loving the Horniman Museum and took our first visit to the East Dulwich Picturehouse the other day which was such a highlight for Cai.  I love the feel of community and being in it together.

Can you share one secret tip to other mothers in this area?

We love Peckham Refreshment Rooms, a must for the occasional date night!
