Meet The Mama
Started in 2017, by Mama of two - Lucy Bestall, What Ted Wore is fast becoming one of our best selling brands at The Mamahood. Born from a desire to create eye catching and bold unisex designs that her two boys could wear. With a soft spot for embroidery and catchy slogans, we hope you love their unique designs as much as we do, and of course, our fave motto...Always. Carry. Snacks.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you started?
I'm Lucy - founder of What Ted Wore, a Bristol based kids brand that specialises in fun, slogan filled clothing and accessories.
I started What Ted Wore four years ago when I moved out of London and left my job in fashion. I wanted to keep being creative, but also spend time with my, then little baby, Ted.
What do you love most about what you do?
It took me a while to realise it, but I love being my own boss! I like making the decisions and being able to (hopefully) figure out the best for my brand.
It's also great having the freedom to work around my two boys - it's definitely a privilege to be able to do my own thing and look after them at the same time. I feel very lucky.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt from your business?
That it's ok to make mistakes...and it's ok to share them too.
My biggest faux paux was ordering a big batch of my bestselling t-shirts, and opening the delivery to discover I had approved the wrong design (that’s what happens when you speed read emails in the Sainsbury's car park with a toddler in the back seat).
I was absolutely gutted to be honest, but after wallowing for a couple of hours I decided to put the t-shirts into sale on my website and make a funny reel for Instagram in the hope someone would want one. Turns out a lot of people did (who doesn’t love a bargain) and the reel also went viral with over 1.4 million people viewing it. It still blows my mind today!
Tell us something about yourself or your business that others may not know?
Apart from my accountant (who does my tax return – don’t know what I’d do without him) I do all areas of the business - from design, packing orders, social media, marketing etc. One day I’d love to move to a fulfilment centre and be able to offer a quicker turnaround time on orders. That’s one of my business goals for either this year or next.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
My two boys! Honestly, Ted and Frank are the biggest inspiration ever. My best selling 'Always, Eating. Snacks' t-shirt came from them just always asking for and eating snacks.
How do you continue to maintain creativity around Motherhood?
I feel like creativity is everywhere if you keep any eye out for it. I'm always looking for colour combos or slogans that would work together. Lego (a firm fave in our house) is pretty great for coming up with colours that work together. Kids are also always coming out with amazing slogans. One of Frank’s little friends said a very memorable one at toddler group last week, so keep your eye out for a new tee and tote coming soon!
Name another mama in business that inspires you daily?
To be honest it's impossible to name just one. I think any parent out there looking after their kids and doing their best are totally smashing it.
What do you look for when buying things for your family?
I’m a sucker for colour, green is my absolute fave at the moment, so anything bright and eye catching is a win for me.
What’s the top 3 things you can’t live without?
Oh what a question! First one would probably be lip balm as I have so many dotted around the house/car/in pockets and bags. The second would be a blanket as I'm always cold and love being snuggled up. Third would have to be some kind of snack, probably a box of Ritz crackers. They hold a special place in my heart as I ate a whole box in hospital just after Frank was born and they tasted so good!
